Episode 2: In Which We Learn the Demon Elf's Real Name and Who Adam's Father is

Episode 2

“You lied to me Elf!”

“Actually I’m pretty sure that’s part of my job description. Besides I just didn’t show you everything. And you just lied to Tabitha a few minutes ago. You told her that Kay and Miguel found you when it was me all along. Yes they were looking for you but me and my Darkside buddies made sure they weren’t able to find you.”

“You showed me your battle with Endora after Mother sacrificed her powers, only you made it look like you defeated her then took her and our Mother and tied them to stakes right in the path of the erupting volcano.”

“Oh, if only that could have been true.”

“The truth is after Endora defeated you with her love for our Mother, you lost all that extra power the Darkside had given you. So when you heard Kay and Miguel were looking for help in other dimensions, you followed them and made sure you found me before they did. Then you made me believe the only way to save Harmony was to turn back time, but I knew that I didn’t have enough power to do that on my own.”

“I must admit even I was impressed when you came up with idea of using Essme’s unused wishes to boost your powers.”

“Yes, but an alternate timeline was created, and that’s how I know you tricked me. I’ve been watching what would have happened in Mother’s bowl, so I know if I had done nothing; the catastrophe would have been averted without my help. Everyone in Harmony including my Mother and sister would have lived…”

The Demon Elf threw up his hands and covered his ears. “Don’t you say it!”

“…Happily Ever After!!” Adam shouted.

“We Darksiders hate that phase.”

“Yes, I know.” Adam laughed.

“By turning back time you’ve averted a catastrophe (as far as the Darkside is concerned anyway).”

“And what’s that?”

“You just said it: Ultimate happiness for Harmony. The Darkside just couldn’t put up with that. But don’t feel so bad. Why just by you putting the kibosh on old Al, you’ve saved quite a few lives.”

“Yeah, I’m sure the Darkside is just thrilled about that.”

“Of coarse not, but it’s a matter of degrees my friend. Well would you look at the time. I’d love to continue this little post mortem but it’s well past my bedtime. Have a ghastly evening.”

The Demon Elf disappeared, only to reappear seconds later on Tabby’s front porch. He peered in the window and watched Adam, who was looking intently into the magic bowl.

“He’s falling in nicely with our plans. Isn’t he Eustace?” Someone else had joined him on porch and he recognized her voice immediately.

“Madam,- - you know my real name - - They told me you might be working with me on this assignment but I never thought I’d meet you this soon - - May I say this is a genuine honor - -

“Enough groveling, the Boys thought you could use my help after you were unable to defeat Endora, and you may call me Heckuba.”

“I’ve read so much about your exploits, to actually be in your presence…”

“I said no groveling! Now I was given to understand that it was your idea to use Adam to counteract the ‘incident’?”

“Well, I had always heard that Tabitha had had a son.”

“Then you know who his father is?”

“That quack Dr. Bombay.”

“Yes, Tabby was always obsessed with fictional magical characters. Bewitched was her favorite show, but she had a fling once with Barnabas Collins as well. No danger of any offspring there. However I digress. As soon as Adam was born Bombay had him shipped off to another dimension. He was afraid Tabitha would be a bad influence on him. Tabby hardly even noticed Adam was gone; she was so focused on her evil mission back then.”

“But she’s been flirting with Goodness lately.”

“She did more than just flirt with it in that other timeline. We have to make the most of the second chance you and Adam have given us. She must not decide to take the final step into Goodness again.”

“Well it would seem the best way to do that would still be to separate her from Endora.”

“No, the Boys have decided to take another tact, for now. Her love for Tabby is just too strong. But she’ll be a rebellious teenager soon enough and then we’ll reevaluate. Our focus right now has to be Adam. He helped us with our little “problem” but only because you duped him. He’s a Goodie-Goodie just like his father. We have to keep him distracted so he doesn’t spill the beans to Tabitha or Endora. Tabitha must never know that she has the power to bring true Harmony to Harmony by being baptized.”

“So, how are we supposed to keep him distracted?”

“As I said, he’s already falling in nicely with our plan. Look at him; he hasn’t taken his eyes off Tabitha’s bowl since you left him.”

“Why is that?”

“He’s fascinated with the events of that alternate timeline that was created after he shifted time.”

“What’s he looking at now?”
“Let’s find out.” Heckuba waved her hands and the image in the bowl appeared in the air in front of them. “Ah yes, it’s Sam Bennett’s video camera.”

“Why would he be interested in that?”

“Remember that for the past nine years, Adam has been watching the events in Harmony via a television program I believe the mortals refer to as a soap opera. I think it was called Passions. In that time, I’m afraid our poor dear Adam has fallen for one of the denizens of this quaint little berg.”

“Wait a minute, that video camera has Gwen Hotchkiss and her shrew of a mother confessing to all the schemes they carried out on …you don’t mean?”

“Exactly, he might not be fully aware of it himself but Adam Lennox-Bombay is hopelessly in love with none other than Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald-Crane.”
